On 04/15/2026, Illinois State Police officers were assisting with an investigation in the 6500 block of South Champlain Avenue when they encountered Jalen Carpenter. Police attempted to stop him, and he ran. Officers chased him on foot. Police reported Carpenter had a gun during the pursuit. During the encounter, officers opened fire, striking him. He died following the shooting. A firearm was recovered. The Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation is conducting an investigation into the incident.
