OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 04/10/2026, Riverside County Sheriff's deputies responded to reports that Brian Gillis, 34, was experiencing a mental health crisis and had left in a vehicle while armed with a knife. Deputies located Gillis driving in the Palm Desert area and attempted to stop him. Gillis continued driving away, initiating a pursuit that proceeded through city streets before entering Interstate 10.
The pursuit ended near Washington Street after deputies stopped Gillis's vehicle. Gillis exited while armed with a knife. Deputies repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife and attempted to de-escalate the encounter. According to investigators, Gillis advanced toward Deputy Caleb Bumgarner while still holding the knife. Deputy Bumgarner fired his service weapon, striking Gillis. Deputies rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived, but Gillis died from his injuries.
The Riverside County Force Investigation Detail assumed responsibility for the criminal investigation, while the Sheriff's Administrative Investigation Unit conducted a parallel administrative review. Investigators processed the pursuit route and shooting scene, recovered the knife, interviewed witnesses and deputies, and reviewed body-worn camera recordings and other evidence.
Subsequent reporting identified the decedent as Brian Gillis, 34, and identified the involved deputy as Caleb Bumgarner. I did not locate any later public announcement indicating that another agency found the deputy's use of force to be unlawful or identifying additional officers who fired.
