On 04/18/2026, officers with the Scott Police Department attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Michael Vavasseur, who had escaped from custody days earlier. Vavasseur did not stop, and police chased the vehicle through Lafayette Parish into Carencro. During the pursuit, he stopped at a residence where a passenger exited and was taken into custody, then continued driving. Police said he nearly struck an officer before the pursuit continued. The chase ended when the vehicle collided with a law enforcement unit on North Wilderness Trail. Vavasseur exited the vehicle with a gun and ran. During the encounter, police said he fired at officers. Officers opened fire, striking him. He was pronounced dead.
