On 04/18/2026, a deputy with the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office attempted a traffic stop on a motorcycle for speeding near Agua Fria and San Felipe. The driver did not stop, and the deputy later located him near an apartment complex off Paseo del Sol. The deputy exited the patrol vehicle and chased him on foot. During the encounter, Randall Brian Lopez pulled a gun and fired at the deputy, missing him. The deputy opened fire and struck him. Deputies provided aid until emergency personnel arrived, but he was pronounced dead. Authorities stated the firearm was stolen. The New Mexico State Police are conducting the investigation.
