On 04/22/2026, Somerset Police Department officers responded to a residence in downtown Somerset to serve two Pulaski County District Court arrest warrants on Matthew J. Shepherd. Officers attempted to make contact and a standoff developed. Around 1:00 a.m., during the standoff, Shepherd shot himself inside the residence. Officers then entered and found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Reporting indicates officers were attempting to serve warrants at the time of the incident. One firearm was involved.
