On 04/22/2026, Sherwood Police Department officers requested assistance from Arkansas State Police during a pursuit of a fleeing vehicle on Interstate 40. An Arkansas State Police trooper joined the pursuit. The driver, Marquez Smart, did not stop. A trooper deployed a tactical vehicle intervention, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and come to rest near the eastbound on-ramp at Prothro Junction. As officers approached the vehicle to take him into custody, Smart was found inside with a gunshot wound to the head while holding a pistol. He was pronounced dead. Authorities reported that no officers discharged their weapons.
