OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 04/23/2026, U.S. Marshals Service deputies attempted to arrest Joseph McDowell at a residence at 309 West Pine Street in Deming on an extradition warrant. Deputies breached the door and encountered McDowell holding a rifle in a firing position. At least one deputy opened fire. McDowell retreated inside the home, and officers established a perimeter and attempted to get him to surrender. After no response, officers deployed a drone and robot into the residence and found McDowell dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
