On 04/24/2026, Metro Narcotics agents with the Las Cruces Police Department were conducting surveillance during a narcotics investigation near the 2300 block of East Lohman Avenue. Police said agents attempted to contact David Gallegos Jr. near a McDonald’s parking lot when gunfire erupted during the encounter. Officers opened fire, striking and killing Gallegos. Police said a firearm was recovered from his possession. The Officer-Involved Incident Task Force, including New Mexico State Police, the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office, Las Cruces police, and New Mexico State University police, is investigating the shooting.
