OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

A Rocky Mount police officer responded to a vehicle crash at the Texas Roadhouse parking lot on Gateway Boulevard around 12:20 p.m. and identified the driver as Michael Williams, 39, who police said had outstanding felony warrants. About 10 minutes later, the officer encountered Williams in the DoubleTree hotel parking lot. Police said Williams argued with the officer and did not comply with commands. Williams started his vehicle and attempted to leave the lot. The officer used a patrol vehicle to block the exit, but Williams struck the patrol vehicle twice before driving away. Police escalated a chase through commercial and residential areas at speeds reaching about 75 mph before Williams crashed in the 100 block of Jones Road and fled on foot. Police said Williams struggled with the officer near the State Employees Credit Union on Sunset Avenue. During the confrontation, the officer opened fire, striking and killing Williams. The officer was treated for injuries and released. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.
