On 04/29/2026, Thurston County sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop Tyler Charles Harrington near Yelm Highway Southeast after reports connected him to a stolen vehicle investigation. Police said Harrington refused to stop and deputies chased the vehicle through the area. The pursuit ended near McKenna Elementary School after deputies used a PIT maneuver. Police stated Harrington got out of the vehicle holding a firearm. A deputy opened fire and killed him. Deputies deployed a K9 during the incident. Nearby schools briefly entered lockdown during the investigation. The Washington State Office of Independent Investigations is investigating the shooting.
