OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 05/02/2026, Johnson County deputies responded to reports of a 17 year old girl suffering a gunshot wound inside a vehicle near Missouri Highway 131 and U.S. Highway 50. Police said Saveion McConnell, 19, left the area before deputies arrived. Nearly two hours later, a Lafayette County deputy, Johnson County deputy, and Odessa police officer encountered McConnell and another man walking near U.S. Highway 50 and NW 1601 Road. Police said McConnell matched the description of the person they were seeking and ran when officers approached. During the pursuit, a Lafayette County deputy struck McConnell with a patrol vehicle before McConnell continued running. A Lafayette County deputy then opened fire, striking and killing him. Authorities said no weapon was recovered from McConnell or the surrounding area. Family members and witnesses disputed the police account and said McConnell had his hands raised when he was shot, while the Missouri State Highway Patrol stated body camera footage did not support that claim. McConnell’s family announced plans to seek legal counsel. The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the shooting.
