OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 05/03/2026, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers attempted to stop a vehicle reported stolen near Old Pineville Road shortly after 10 p.m. Police said the driver refused to stop, after which officers deactivated their emergency equipment. An officer working an off-duty assignment later followed the vehicle from a distance and saw it crash on Interstate 77 near Nations Ford Road. Two people exited the vehicle and ran from the crash. One person was taken into custody. The second person ran across the interstate into the southbound lanes and was struck by an oncoming vehicle and killed. North Carolina State Highway Patrol and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department detectives are investigating the incident.
