OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 05/04/2026, Eau Claire County sheriff’s deputies responded to a three vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 312/North Crossing and Highway 12 in the Town of Union. Investigators said Kelly Whalen, 34, fled from the crash area on foot. Deputy Joseph Wollum left the crash location and later encountered Whalen near Lyle Lane and Chuck Lane. Police said Whalen was holding a knife during the confrontation. Deputy Wollum opened fire, striking and killing him. Authorities said a knife was recovered nearby. One person involved in the original crash suffered non life threatening injuries. The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation.
