OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 05/04/2026, Wichita police and a mental health response team responded to a call involving a man in mental health crisis in the 1400 block of West Haskell Avenue. Family members reported the man was suicidal and had access to firearms. Police attempted to contact him by phone before approaching the residence. According to Wichita police, an officer heard a gunshot from inside a vehicle as the officer approached. Officers then opened fire into the vehicle. Witnesses later questioned the sequence of events and whether police fired before or after the gunshot inside the vehicle. Authorities said the 27-year-old man died from a gunshot wound. His identity had not been publicly released. The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting.
