Polk County deputies attempted to stop a vehicle around 1:30 p.m. on Landrum Road in North Carolina. Willie Gist did not stop. Police escalated a chase that continued into Landrum in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. During the pursuit, Gist lost control while taking a turn and crashed on Hunting Country Road. North Carolina Highway Patrol said Gist died from injuries sustained in the crash. The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
