OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
Stewart County deputies responded to a domestic disturbance near Dover after authorities said Craig Berry shot his wife during an argument at their home on 05/01/2026. Berry fled into heavily wooded terrain before deputies arrived. Police escalated a large multi agency manhunt involving the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, United States Marshals Service, and Tennessee Highway Patrol. Authorities described Berry as a retired Special Forces veteran with extensive survival training who was familiar with the area and believed to be armed. During searches on 05/06/2026, deputies and TBI agents located Berry dead in the woods near the River Trace Road area. The Stewart County Sheriff’s Office said initial indications showed he died from a self inflicted gunshot wound. Berry’s wife survived the shooting and was later released from the hospital.
