On 05/07/2026, Richmond police responded to the Belt Atlantic apartment complex in the 4000 block of Midlothian Turnpike after multiple 911 calls reported gunfire. Police said officers heard additional shots as they entered the building and residents directed them upstairs. Body camera footage later released by Richmond police showed Jazmin Wooten-Mitchell, 31, on an upper level walkway holding a handgun. Police said she fired multiple shots in the direction of officers and another woman near the stairwell. An officer opened fire, striking and killing her. Police recovered a handgun at the location. Richmond police later released body camera footage, apartment surveillance video, and a narrated critical incident briefing video. Family members and community members identified Wooten-Mitchell as a mother of two. Reporting stated that the father of one of her children had died the day before the shooting. The Virginia State Police are investigating the shooting.
