OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 05/06/2026, officers with the Susanville Police Department responded to a welfare check at the 300 block of Richmond Road after family members expressed concerns about three children staying with Ngirasiau "Derek" Sikong. Police said Sikong was holding a machete and acting erratically. According to investigators, Sikong held a two year old child outside a second story window before pulling the child back inside. Officers opened fire through the window and entered the residence. Police reported that Sikong struck Officer David Lee with a machete, causing a shoulder injury. Officers opened fire again and killed Sikong. Three children were removed from the residence without reported physical injuries. Officer Lee was treated at a hospital and released. The Lassen County Law Enforcement Interagency Investigation Team investigated the shooting and the Lassen County District Attorney determined the officers' actions were legally justified.
