On 05/11/2026, Salina police attempted to stop Brandon Michael Sears during a traffic stop connected to a prior law enforcement interaction. Police said Sears exited his vehicle holding a firearm before getting back inside and continuing to drive away. Officers escalated a vehicle chase through Salina. During the pursuit, police said Sears attempted to strike a Saline County deputy with his vehicle. Officers deployed stop sticks at two locations before the chase ended in the 1200 block of Pacific Avenue. Police said Sears exited the vehicle wearing body armor and opened fire on officers. Officers returned fire and killed Sears. Witnesses reported hearing multiple rounds fired during the exchange. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.
