OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 05/09/2026, Muncie police responded to the 3000 block of West Oaklyn Avenue after reports that James Patrick Willis was attempting to force entry into a residence. Officers confronted Willis at the location. Police said Willis attempted to leave in a 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck and drove toward a Muncie police officer. An officer opened fire, striking Willis at least once. Police said Willis continued driving from the area before crashing near South Tillotson Avenue and West Godman Avenue. Willis was pronounced dead after the crash. The Muncie Police Department requested the Indiana State Police conduct an independent investigation into the shooting.
