On 05/08/2026, Chattanooga police responded to a domestic assault call involving two people near the John A. Patten Community Center. Officers said Douglas Bearden had left before police arrived. Police later located Bearden in the 3200 block of Kellys Ferry Road and attempted to make contact with him. Authorities said Bearden and two officers fired weapons during the encounter. Officers shot and killed Bearden. Two Chattanooga officers were placed on administrative leave following the shooting. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is conducting the investigation.
