On 05/07/2026, San Leandro police responded to a welfare check after a friend reported that a man had made suicidal statements and was experiencing depression. Officers first searched for him at a residence in the 14500 block of Santiago Road before locating him seated inside a vehicle near the San Leandro Marina boat launch. Police said officers spoke with the man for several minutes while he remained inside the vehicle. Authorities said the man then produced a firearm and pointed it at officers. Officers opened fire, killing him. Emergency personnel attempted medical aid, but he died from his injuries. Three officers were placed on administrative leave following the shooting. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, the San Leandro Police Department, and the city’s Independent Police Auditor opened investigations into the incident.
