OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 05/08/2026, Hays police responded after reports that a man stole a handgun from a local gun shop in Hays. Police said the man, who reportedly had blood on his hands, left the area before officers arrived. Officers later located the vehicle at a residence in the 200 block of West 24th Street and established a perimeter around the home. Police activated the Special Situation Response Team and brought in an armored vehicle from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Authorities said statements made by the man led officers to believe he was experiencing a mental health crisis and could pose a danger to himself. Negotiators and mental health crisis personnel attempted to contact him for several hours. Police later obtained a search warrant and breached the residence using the armored vehicle. Drones operated by the Kansas Highway Patrol and KBI were deployed inside the home. Officers found the man dead in the garage from an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound. The incident remains under investigation by the Ellis County Coroner and Hays Police Department.
