OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 05/08/2026, Arlington County police responded to a 7-Eleven on Columbia Pike after reports of a disorderly man threatening a woman outside the store. Police said Shawn Valn displayed a knife, ignored commands from officers, and entered the business. Officers evacuated employees and customers while establishing a perimeter around the store. Police later obtained arrest warrants for assault and obstruction of justice after speaking with the woman involved. Authorities said Valn barricaded himself inside a back room of the 7-Eleven while negotiators attempted for several hours to convince him to surrender. Around 9 p.m., officers breached the room to take him into custody. Police said Valn displayed a knife during the encounter and two officers opened fire, striking him. Valn was transported to a hospital where he later died. Two officers were hospitalized for precautionary evaluation and later released. The regional Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting.
