OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 05/12/2026, Elizabethtown police said Michael Bynum Horne Jr. drove past the Elizabethtown Police Department and opened fire on the building in a drive-by shooting. Police said Horne later exchanged gunfire with deputies near West Broad Street after law enforcement tracked him to the area. Deputies opened fire during the confrontation, striking Horne. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities said the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation was requested to investigate the shooting.
