On 05/11/2026, Bucyrus Police Department officers responded to Bucyrus Plaza Apartments and the 900 block of East Warren Street after reports that Paul Desmarais was threatening residents, damaging property, and acting erratically. Police said officers encountered Desmarais wearing body armor and carrying a firearm inside the apartment complex area. Authorities evacuated nearby residents and closed surrounding streets as the situation escalated into an hours-long armed barricade standoff involving multiple law enforcement agencies, tactical teams, and bomb technicians.
Police said Desmarais refused to surrender during negotiations that lasted roughly 13 to 14 hours overnight. Officers deployed chemical agents into the residence and repeatedly attempted to force him out. Authorities stated Desmarais wore a gas mask during the standoff, which police said reduced the effectiveness of the gas deployment. Neighbors reported hearing repeated explosions and described police tearing into portions of the apartment structure during breaching operations. Tactical vehicles and armored equipment were brought to the area as officers attempted to gain access to the apartment.
Police later claimed Desmarais fired shots during the confrontation and threatened officers with explosive devices. Authorities said investigators recovered suspected explosive materials and components for additional devices from inside the residence after the shooting. During the final confrontation, officers opened fire and killed Desmarais.
