OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY : On 05/10/2026, Southampton Town police responded to a residence on Toppings Drive after a woman reported that her son, Steven Eastwood, was intoxicated and acting violently inside the home. While officers were responding, the woman called 911 again and reported that Eastwood was threatening her with a knife. Officers entered the residence and found Eastwood holding a knife while standing over his mother, who was on the floor. Police said officers repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife and attempted to pull him away from the victim. Police said Eastwood returned to his mother and continued stabbing and slashing her. Officers opened fire, killing him. Authorities said the woman suffered more than 40 stab and slash wounds and was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition. The New York Attorney General’s Office opened an investigation into the shooting.
