On 05/10/2026, deputies with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office responded with the Florida Department of Children and Families during a welfare-related visit at a residence in Clay County, Florida. Deputies discovered that Morris Anthony Davis was wanted in Mississippi in connection with a 2013 murder case and attempted to take him into custody. Police said Davis picked up two knives and refused commands. Deputies deployed Tasers multiple times before Deputy Sheriff D. Brown opened fire and killed him. Video from the encounter reportedly captured Davis saying he would rather die than return to jail. Family members disputed the use of deadly force and said Davis was on the ground and several feet away from deputies when he was shot. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Attorney’s Office are investigating.
