OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 02/24/2026, officers with the Sebastian Police Department attempted to stop a white Kia Seltos that police said was traveling more than 100 mph on U.S. 1 near Barber Street. Police later located the vehicle parked near Baldwin Drive in Micco. Officers approached Elias J. Ramos outside the vehicle and Ramos ran from police toward the Indian River Lagoon. Police chased him on foot and officers saw him jump into the water. A multi-agency search involving the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office failed to locate him. On 03/01/2026, a boater discovered Ramos’ body floating near the shoreline off Indian River Drive in Sebastian. Investigators said weather conditions and currents likely carried the body south through the lagoon before it washed ashore in Indian River County. Authorities said Ramos had previously been involved in a family dispute, underwent a mental health evaluation in Palm Beach County, and was allegedly driving a stolen vehicle before the chase. An autopsy was ordered to determine the official cause of death.
