Cause of Death : Suicide
Event : Suicide under police duress
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 04/14/2026, detectives with the Denton Police Department were conducting an ongoing criminal investigation and had obtained a search warrant for an adult male suspect. Before executing the warrant at a residence, detectives observed the suspect driving in Denton and decided to conduct a traffic stop in order to safely detain him. Detectives activated their emergency equipment, and the driver stopped his vehicle on Montecito Drive just south of El Paseo Street.
At approximately 12:18 p.m., before detectives approached the stopped vehicle, the man produced a firearm and shot himself. Detectives immediately requested emergency medical assistance and secured the scene. The man was the only occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers discharged their weapons, and no officers or bystanders were injured during the incident.
Because the death occurred during a law enforcement encounter, the Texas Rangers assumed responsibility for the independent investigation. Rangers processed the scene, documented the vehicle, collected the firearm and other physical evidence, interviewed the involved detectives and witnesses, and reviewed the circumstances surrounding the attempted warrant service and traffic stop.
The Denton Police Department stated that the traffic stop was initiated as part of an ongoing criminal investigation connected to the search warrant. Investigators did not publicly disclose the nature of the underlying investigation while the case remained active. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office was assigned responsibility for determining the official cause and manner of death following notification of the man's family.

Cause of Death : Vehicle
Event : Passenger killed by police chase crash
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 04/14/2026 shortly after midnight, Caleb Jesus Ramirez Martinez was one of three people traveling in an older-model pickup truck that had been reported stolen from Hollister. An automated alert first notified Gilroy Police Department officers that the truck had entered Gilroy. Gilroy officers saw the vehicle, but it left the city before they attempted a traffic stop.
Morgan Hill Police Department officers later located the truck traveling northbound on Monterey Road near Middle Avenue. Officers attempted to stop the truck in the 14000 block of Monterey Road, but the driver continued driving away. Officers encountered the truck again in the 15000 block of Monterey Road and made another stop attempt. During that encounter, the truck struck a tree and a large trash container near responding officers and continued south toward Gilroy. Morgan Hill police then pursued the truck.
The pursuit continued southbound on Monterey Road into Gilroy. The truck entered the intersection of Monterey Road and Leavesley Road against a red traffic signal. Morgan Hill officers slowed before entering the intersection so cross traffic could clear, causing them to briefly lose sight of the truck.
After officers cleared the intersection and continued south, they found that the truck had crashed into the center median and a light pole on Monterey Road near First Street, in front of St. Mary’s Church. The truck overturned, ejecting Caleb, Andre Zayven Martinez and a third occupant. Police officers and paramedics provided emergency treatment, but Caleb and Andre died at the scene. The third occupant sustained critical injuries and was flown to a trauma center.
The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner later identified the deceased as Caleb Jesus Ramirez Martinez, 19, and Andre Zayven Martinez, 16. Although some initial news reports referred to Andre as “Andrew,” his family obituary identifies him as Andre Zayven Martinez. Investigators stated that one of the two deceased occupants was believed to have been driving, but publicly available reporting did not establish which person was behind the wheel.
