Rangers processed the scene, documented the vehicle, collected the firearm and other physical evidence, interviewed the involved detectives and witnesses, and reviewed the circumstances surrounding the attempted warrant service and traffic stop.

Morgan Hill Police Department officers later located the truck traveling northbound on Monterey Road near Middle Avenue. Officers attempted to stop the truck in the 14000 block of Monterey Road, but the driver continued driving away. Officers encountered the truck again in the 15000 block of Monterey Road and made another stop attempt. During that encounter, the truck struck a tree and a large trash container near responding officers and continued south toward Gilroy. Morgan Hill police then pursued the truck.
The pursuit continued southbound on Monterey Road into Gilroy. The truck entered the intersection of Monterey Road and Leavesley Road against a red traffic signal. Morgan Hill officers slowed before entering the intersection so cross traffic could clear, causing them to briefly lose sight of the truck.
After officers cleared the intersection and continued south, they found that the truck had crashed into the center median and a light pole on Monterey Road near First Street, in front of St. Mary’s Church. The truck overturned, ejecting Caleb, Andre Zayven Martinez and a third occupant. Police officers and paramedics provided emergency treatment, but Caleb and Andre died at the scene. The third occupant sustained critical injuries and was flown to a trauma center.

On 04/15/2026 at approximately 12:15 a.m., Farmington Police Department officers responded to East Main Street after receiving reports of a person lying in the roadway. Two marked Farmington police patrol vehicles responded to the call from different directions. As the officers approached the area near Lake Street, one patrol vehicle struck a man who was lying in the travel lane. Moments later, a second responding Farmington police vehicle also struck the same man before either officer realized a person was in the roadway.
The man suffered catastrophic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators later identified him as Ernest Begay, 46. The circumstances that led to Begay being in the roadway before officers arrived were not publicly explained in the initial investigation.
The New Mexico State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit responded to conduct the independent investigation. Investigators documented the scene, examined both Farmington police vehicles, collected physical evidence, reviewed in-car camera recordings and other available evidence, and interviewed the involved officers and witnesses. East Main Street remained closed for several hours while the investigation was completed.
Farmington Police Chief Steve Hebbe stated that the department was cooperating fully with the New Mexico State Police investigation. The involved officers were placed on standard administrative leave pending completion of the investigation. On 04/06/2026, Tucson Police Department officers responded to a reported armed robbery at a business on North Campbell Avenue. Two teenagers entered the business, assaulted an employee, and took money and car keys before leaving in a vehicle. On 04/13/2026 at approximately 4:30 a.m., U.S. Border Patrol agents attempted to stop a Chevrolet Tahoe that investigators believed was being used to transport undocumented migrants near Brownsville. Instead of stopping, the driver continued driving away while Border Patrol agents pursued. The pursuit continued onto FM 511.
During the pursuit, the driver lost control of the Tahoe, causing it to leave the roadway and roll over. The vehicle came to rest after overturning multiple times. The driver sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. Four passengers, identified by authorities as undocumented migrants, were injured in the crash and transported to area hospitals for treatment.
Brownsville police officers and emergency medical personnel responded to the crash scene. Investigators determined the incident began as a suspected human-smuggling attempt involving the Border Patrol pursuit. Brownsville police assumed responsibility for the traffic crash investigation while federal authorities investigated the suspected smuggling activity.
Investigators arrested Jose Angel Rivera, who admitted serving as a foot guide for the group. During interviews, Rivera identified Yahir David Martinez, 21, of Brownsville, as the driver of the Tahoe. Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene.
