On 05/05/2026, deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and troopers with the Georgia State Patrol attempted to stop a vehicle on Interstate 75 in Monroe County. Police said the driver did not stop and officers chased the vehicle southbound on the interstate. During the pursuit, the fleeing vehicle entered the northbound lanes while traveling the wrong direction and collided head on with another vehicle near mile marker 190. Two people were killed in the crash, including the fleeing driver and the uninvolved driver of the other vehicle. The crash shut down portions of Interstate 75 for several hours while investigators processed the area.
