OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 04/14/2026, detectives with the Denton Police Department were conducting an ongoing criminal investigation and had obtained a search warrant for an adult male suspect. Before executing the warrant at a residence, detectives observed the suspect driving in Denton and decided to conduct a traffic stop in order to safely detain him. Detectives activated their emergency equipment, and the driver stopped his vehicle on Montecito Drive just south of El Paseo Street.
At approximately 12:18 p.m., before detectives approached the stopped vehicle, the man produced a firearm and shot himself. Detectives immediately requested emergency medical assistance and secured the scene. The man was the only occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers discharged their weapons, and no officers or bystanders were injured during the incident.
Because the death occurred during a law enforcement encounter, the Texas Rangers assumed responsibility for the independent investigation. Rangers processed the scene, documented the vehicle, collected the firearm and other physical evidence, interviewed the involved detectives and witnesses, and reviewed the circumstances surrounding the attempted warrant service and traffic stop.
The Denton Police Department stated that the traffic stop was initiated as part of an ongoing criminal investigation connected to the search warrant. Investigators did not publicly disclose the nature of the underlying investigation while the case remained active. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office was assigned responsibility for determining the official cause and manner of death following notification of the man's family.
