OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 05/12/2026, deputies with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jacob Johnson and placed him in the back of a patrol vehicle outside the Hancock County Justice Center in Sneedville. According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Johnson had a handgun concealed on his person when he was taken into custody.

Authorities said Johnson shot himself while seated in the rear of the patrol vehicle. Deputies and emergency personnel transported him to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation opened an investigation into the death at the request of the local district attorney. Officials did not immediately explain how Johnson retained possession of the firearm after his arrest.
