OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 03/01/2026, officers with the North Sioux City Police Department responded after authorities in northwest Iowa reported a reckless driver traveling toward South Dakota. According to Union County Sheriff Jim Prouty, two North Sioux City police officers located the vehicle near Exit 4 on Interstate 29 and began following it.
Authorities said the vehicle traveled onto Highway 105, where the driver suddenly stopped, causing a collision involving the vehicle and two police vehicles. After the crash, the driver barricaded themselves inside the vehicle near Highway 105 and Northshore Drive while law enforcement surrounded the area and shut down traffic.
According to the sheriff, officers attempted negotiations during the standoff. Authorities stated the driver inflicted knife wounds on themselves while inside the vehicle. After officers removed the driver from the vehicle, emergency personnel attempted lifesaving measures and transported the person to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Authorities did not publicly release the identity of the deceased at the time of reporting.
