OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 05/14/2026, Kansas City Kansas police responded to an apartment in the 1400 block of North 78th Place after a woman called 911 requesting help with a disturbance involving her adult son. Officers arrived and saw Jesse Fitzgeral sitting in an SUV outside the apartment. Police attempted to question him, but he drove away. About an hour later, the woman called 911 again requesting police assistance. Officers returned and found the SUV parked outside with the engine running. When officers approached the apartment, Fitzgeral ran out toward them holding a metal object. Police said a brief physical struggle occurred and one officer opened fire, striking him. Officers attempted life saving measures, but Fitzgeral was pronounced dead. Police later said a metal spoon was found near him. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is conducting the investigation.
