OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 05/17/2026, Fort Smith police responded to reports of a shooting in the 7200 block of Massard Road. Police said Joshua Keller shot Officer Kyle Newman, causing life threatening injuries. Fort Smith police chased Keller onto Interstate 540 toward the Grand Avenue exit. During the pursuit, police opened fire and killed Keller near the Grand Avenue exit. Officer Newman was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
