On 05/17/2026, deputies with the Hickman County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop in the 2100 block of Old Beaver Creek Road near Bon Aqua, Tennessee, at approximately 3:00 p.m. During the stop, a confrontation occurred between deputies and front-seat passenger James Heggie, 36.
According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, multiple deputies opened fire during the encounter, striking Heggie. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities have not publicly disclosed what led to the confrontation or whether Heggie had a weapon. No deputies were reported injured.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation at the request of 32nd Judicial District Attorney General Hans Schwendimann.
