OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 05/18/2026, Alexandria Police Department officers responded to an apartment at 27 Canterbury Square in Alexandria, Virginia, after receiving reports that a woman had been shot. Police arrived around 4:05 a.m. and evacuated multiple relatives from the apartment while an adult male remained barricaded inside a room where officers believed the injured woman was located.

Police said the man refused commands and later ran toward officers. Two officers opened fire, striking him. Officers attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead.

Inside the apartment, officers found an adult woman with multiple gunshot wounds. She was also pronounced dead. Authorities have not publicly released the identities of either deceased person. Police Chief Tarrick McGuire said body camera footage would help determine additional details about the confrontation.

The regional Critical Incident Response Team is conducting the criminal investigation. Alexandria Police Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility and the Office of the Independent Police Auditor are also reviewing the shooting. The two officers involved were placed on administrative leave.
