On 05/18/2026, Sumter County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Sally Street in Wedgefield during a domestic violence related incident. Police stated Anthony Lee Safrit barricaded himself inside a residence while holding a handgun, leading to a standoff with deputies. During the confrontation, Safrit died from a self inflicted gunshot wound while officers remained outside the residence. Authorities reported no officers fired their weapons during the incident. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was notified and reviewed the case.
