On 05/19/2026, Oklahoma City Police Department officers responded to an apartment complex near Southwest 60th Street and McKinley Avenue after reports that Brenda Deer was firing a gun inside her apartment during a mental health crisis. Police evacuated nearby residents and attempted negotiations during an hours-long standoff. Around 1 a.m., police said Deer fired several shots from the apartment toward officers. An officer opened fire, killing her. No officers or bystanders were reported injured. The involved officer was placed on administrative leave pending investigation.
