On 05/20/2026, Tulare County sheriff’s deputies responded to 409 W. Matheny Avenue during a welfare check after reports of a possible fight at the residence. Deputies said Michael Pinon, 38, refused to come outside and remained inside the home for an extended period, leading to a standoff. Police said Pinon later ran from the back of the residence holding what deputies believed was a firearm. Deputies opened fire and killed him. Investigators later stated Pinon was unarmed and had been holding a cellphone. Family members said Pinon had celebrated his birthday the day before and described him as closely connected to his children and family. His longtime girlfriend publicly questioned the deputies’ actions and said the family was devastated by the shooting. The California Department of Justice is investigating the killing.
