OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 05/23/2026, Wichita police responded to multiple reports of a man pointing a firearm at vehicles near K-96 and Greenwich Road in east Wichita. Officers later located the man near 21st Street North, where police said he again pointed a gun toward passing vehicles before running into the Wilson Estates neighborhood. Officers chased the man on foot and attempted to use a Taser, but police said it was ineffective. According to Wichita police, the man then entered a tree line and fired a shot toward officers. Police established a large perimeter involving SWAT vehicles, drones, helicopters, and crisis negotiators during a standoff that lasted several hours. Authorities said negotiators repeatedly attempted to communicate with the man, who was described by police as experiencing a mental health crisis. Police later approached him using an armored vehicle and attempted to provide a communication device while ordering him to drop the gun. According to Wichita police, the man initially held the gun to his own head before pointing it toward officers in the armored vehicle. An officer opened fire, after which police said the man fired back and officers exchanged gunfire with him. He was transported to a hospital, where he died. No officers were injured. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation.
