On 05/24/2026, officers with the North Slope Borough Police Department were involved in a shooting in the 4100 block of Herman Street in Utqiaġvik. According to borough officials, the shooting occurred shortly after 4 p.m. Police provided no details about what led to the encounter or what occurred before officers opened fire. Authorities said officers immediately began medical aid after the shooting and the injured person was transported to a hospital, where they later died. Alaska State Troopers said investigators with the Alaska Bureau of Investigation were traveling to Utqiaġvik to investigate the shooting. Officials stated additional information would be released later as the investigation continues.
