OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 05/23/2026, officers with the Crandon Police Department, Forest County Sheriff’s Office, and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources responded to reports of an active shooter at a housing complex on Indian Settlement Road on the tribal lands of the Sokaogon Chippewa Community in the Town of Nashville. Authorities said the person involved fired a weapon toward nearby residences before officers arrived.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, the person also fired toward responding officers after law enforcement reached the area. Two Crandon police officers and a Wisconsin DNR conservation warden opened fire, striking the individual. Emergency medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but the person died from their injuries. A rifle was recovered at the location.
No officers or members of the public were reported injured. Authorities stated one conservation warden and one Crandon officer were wearing body cameras, and two police vehicles had dashboard camera systems activated during the incident. All officers involved were placed on administrative leave. The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation.
