OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 05/25/2026, Grand Rapids police attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding and erratic driving in Wood County. Police said the driver continued driving away, leading officers to escalate a pursuit. Authorities later stated the chase was terminated because of the danger created by the high speeds involved.
A short time later, investigators believe the same vehicle crashed on Church Avenue near Rangeline Road in the Town of Saratoga, south of Wisconsin Rapids. The vehicle caught fire after the crash. Dispatch audio indicated at least one person became trapped inside the burning vehicle and died.
A nearby resident recorded video showing the vehicle engulfed in flames following the crash. Authorities had not publicly released the identity of the person killed as of initial reporting. The Wood County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the crash and pursuit.
