OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 05/25/2026, U.S. Border Patrol agents spotted a driver traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of U.S. 1 near Riviera Beach in Palm Beach County. Multiple agencies, including Juno Beach police and Jupiter police, became involved as the driver continued traveling the wrong way at high speeds for approximately 16 miles. Investigators said Jupiter police deployed stop sticks, deflating one of the vehicle’s tires, but the driver continued north into Martin County. Authorities alleged the driver also attempted to strike an officer during the pursuit.

Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek stated the vehicle continued driving the wrong way at speeds exceeding 100 mph before crashing head on into two vehicles near the entrance to Jonathan Dickinson State Park in Hobe Sound. The impact scattered debris across a large stretch of roadway before the vehicle left the road, entered a wooded area, and burst into flames. The driver was ejected from the vehicle. First responders attempted CPR, but he died from his injuries.

Four additional people were injured in the crash, including two children. A 6 year old child reportedly suffered significant internal injuries and was airlifted to St. Mary’s Medical Center. Another child and two adults were also hospitalized. Authorities had not publicly released the identity of the driver as of initial reporting. Florida Highway Patrol is leading the crash investigation.
