OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 05/25/2026, Telfair County sheriff’s deputies responded to a complaint involving reported threats made by a man at a property on Studstill Road off Temperance Road. Sheriff Sim Davidson said deputies first spoke with the complainant before going to the property to contact the man. According to the sheriff, deputies were “immediately met with gunfire” upon arrival and retreated while requesting additional assistance.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the area, including the Georgia State Patrol SWAT team and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Authorities said negotiators attempted to contact the man by phone and persuade him to surrender during the prolonged standoff, but those efforts were unsuccessful.

Deputies and tactical teams later entered the residence and found the man suffering from what authorities described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He died from the injury. No deputies or other first responders were reported injured. Sheriff Davidson described the initial gunfire toward deputies as an “ambush-styled attack.” Authorities also stated that limited cellphone and radio coverage in the rural area complicated communication during the response. The man’s identity had not been publicly released as of initial reporting.
