On 05/26/2026, an Indiana State Police trooper conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 94 near Indianapolis Boulevard in Hammond, just east of the Illinois Indiana state line. During the stop, police said gunfire was exchanged between Aaron Barnes, 34, and the trooper along the shoulder of the interstate near the Indiana Toll Road. Police opened fire, killing Barnes at the scene. An Indiana State Police trooper was shot and wounded during the exchange and was transported for medical treatment. Police stated the trooper’s K-9 partner was inside the patrol vehicle during the shooting and was not injured. Authorities said a handgun was recovered at the scene.
