On 05/28/2026, deputies with the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office went to the 13000 block of Gladys Drive to serve a felony warrant on Ricky Adkins, 36. According to authorities, Kristie Adkins attempted to conceal her brother while deputies searched for him. Police said Ricky Adkins then pointed what appeared to be a handgun over his sister's shoulder at deputies. Deputies opened fire, striking both Ricky and Kristie Adkins. Kristie Adkins died from her injuries, while Ricky Adkins was critically injured and transported to a hospital. Investigators later stated that the weapon was a BB or pellet gun designed to resemble a Smith & Wesson M&P Shield handgun. Authorities subsequently charged Ricky Adkins with manslaughter in connection with his sister's death. The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit is investigating the shooting.
