On 05/30/2026, Grand Rapids police responded to reports that Eddie Deans Jr., who also used the name Eddie Williams, had set fire to a Grand Rapids Police Department patrol vehicle near Alpine Avenue. Police stated that Deans later damaged additional property and stabbed a police K-9 during the incident. Officers encountered Deans near 12th Street Northwest and Widdicomb Avenue Northwest. Police stated that Deans was holding an edged weapon when officers confronted him. Officers opened fire, striking Deans. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The K-9 survived its injuries.
